Job Opportunity: Service/UX designer – Birmingham City University (STEAMhouse)

Are you a curious, strategic designer with experience in both UX and service design methods/processes? Do you get a kick out of supporting people to make sense of challenges and develop new ideas in response? Join the Service Innovation team and use your experience in on and offline service development to support regional SMEs and social purpose organisations to create impactful new products, services, programmes, and strategies.

As a Service/UX Designer at STEAMhouse, this role will support members and clients to create new ideas and concepts, all underpinned by real-world insights. The post is to support the Service Innovation team to deliver innovation outcomes for businesses, in particular SMEs, ensuring that STEAMhouse deliver with impact and create high-quality knowledge exchange. The role will support a STEAM community by working on multiple projects with a focus on the delivery of their portfolio of Strategic Innovation services, as well as their collaborative workshops that include, STEAM Labs, STEAM Sprints and STEAM Challenge Events.

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Design and facilitate participatory processes that enable diverse groups to understand complex problems, and create new, or improve existing services to make them more useful, useable, and desirable.
  • Support design research and prototyping to help people validate new service propositions.
  • Support the development of new UX software applications as well as the wider service eco-systems they support.
  • Design with people collaboratively and in the open, participating in the communication of design processes and decisions within project teams and for clients.

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

  • A Commercially driven and entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Figma, Adobe XD or other prototyping software.
  • Ability to participate in multidisciplinary project teams to design services that work for people.
  • Ability to work confidently with external organisations, supporting them to follow design processes.

Salary: £39,888 to £43,356 per annum pro rata Part time – 20 hours
