Circular Steel Initiative

In partnership with Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) we are pleased to announce the launch of ‘Circular Steel’

The Challenge:

At present there is no single solution for a circular steel recycling system at scale within the West Midlands region. The gap is a lack of process and logistics for the identification and segregation of steels of different grades to ensure the economic and sustainable reprocessing and reuse of waste in a recyclable, repurposed manner.

There is also no single industry body or entity that can currently drive innovation in this circular economy supply chain to benefit the region. This Circular Steel Initiative West Midlands project will investigate, design and validate a best-fit future circular steel system within the West Midlands – taking industrial waste and unused raw material from manufacturers, grading and sorting, reprocessing, and feeding it back into construction and other industries.

Main Objectives:

1. Engage the full steel supply chain and wider stakeholder networks to fully understand the sector, the opportunities and challenges

2. Develop a proven business case (economic balanced with environmental) to be used to secure continuation funding from the UK Government’s Foundation Industries or other competitive budgets.

3. Create a repeatable model for assessment of other strategically important supply chains, accelerating the transition to NetZero and circular supply chains, and maximising regional growth, job creation, and GVA.

    Main Outcomes:

    1. A documented and industry validated landscape map design for a circular steel supply chain for the West Midlands, detailing the process, stakeholders, drivers and barriers, coupled with whole supply chain demand and pricing dynamics for each process.

    2. A comprehensive 2-phase ‘get to market’ project plan to build the circular supply chain. Phase 1: physical demonstrator, Phase 2: final rollout.

    3. Creation of a strategic West Midlands Circular Steel steering group of key stakeholders, to own the ongoing mission and ensure continuation and delivery.
