Developing Future Sustainable Manufacturing Leaders

In partnership with WMG, University of Warwick we are pleased to announce the launch of ‘Developing Future Sustainable Manufacturing Leaders’

The Challenge:

Manufacturing industries are rapidly changing with the introduction of new digital technologies, such as automation and digital data capture to aid decision making. These organisations are also seeing external pressures, such as the energy crisis, the changes in trading regulations outside the UK, “flatlining” productivity across the UK manufacturing sector, challenges related to staff recruitment into the industry and staff retention (which is often perceived through an outdated lens), and so on.

Combined with the opportunities around transitioning to more sustainable ways of working and net zero means, there is a need for leaders who can not only thrive in this environment but also take other employees on the journey too whilst achieving business results.

Main Objectives:

1. Increase an awareness of leadership skills, emphasizing the development of a vision and motivating others to work towards it, rather than combining this with management activities to support the mechanics of ongoing business.

2. Address the lack of leadership in manufacturing businesses, by providing context-specific examples of where leadership skills can make a difference to the workplace at all levels, and explicitly the role of innovation achieving a vision.

3. Demonstrate new ways of thinking and innovation needed to run a successful manufacturing business in a market that has more uncertainty and requires quicker adaption to change than was previously expected in manufacturing.

    Main Outcomes:

    1. A validated leadership programme which combines bite sized offsite training with onsite mentored mini project to apply the knowledge shared in the training sessions.

    2. Case studies of the impact that has resulted from the leadership training, including behaviour change and the associated business improvements from the mini projects and beyond.

    3. Evidence of relevance for potential future funders of the value of this programme as well as for companies wishing to support employees on their own leadership journeys.
