Innovative Manufacturing Working Group

Manufacturing is critical to the wellbeing of the West Midlands and there is a proud tradition of innovation in this area. By bringing together manufacturers, including SMEs, academics, public sector and support organisation we have an opportunity to build an even stronger innovation capability.

Our focus is on collaboration and exploring ways to advance manufacturing through the development of new products, services and business models, as well as sharing insights on the technologies, processes and know-how used to deliver value to customers. The strength of the group comes in part from its insights across multiple sectors, including those involved in automotive, aerospace and rail, along with their extensive supply chains.

We also work together to influence the strategies, policies and operational ingredients needed to maximise the benefits from a strong manufacturing base in the region.

Our Manufacturing Lead is Gareth Thomas, University of Warwick; our Aerospace Lead is Andrew Mair, Chief Executive at Midlands Aerospace Alliance; and our Rail Lead is Jenny Illingsworth, Manager of Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education at University of Birmingham.

Chair: Jason Aldridge, Managing Director at Arrowsmith Engineering.
