IMB state on their ‘Cost Of Data Breach Report in 2021’ that they saw the highest average cost rise of a data breach in 17 years. Costs from $3.86 million rising to US $4.24 million on an annual basis.
The dramatic increase of cyber crime and attacks demonstrate why cyber security is an increasing worry on a national scale for the Government and firms in the UK and Europe. So much so the UK Government released a policy paper in November 2016 called the ‘National Cyber Strategy.’ Which has since been newly published in December 2021 for 2022 bringing the policy in line with recent technological updates and figures.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The European Data Protection Regulation became applicable as of 25th May 2018. The GDPR is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy in the Europe. They are regulations to ensure companies are sufficiently protecting any data they may store.
Any company operating in the EU must comply with rules governing the use of the data collected and stored – or face a fine of up to 4% of global turnover.
Since the introduction of the Regulations British Airways (BA) have faced a record fine of £183 million and Marriott Hotel Group faced a fine of £99 million due to serious breaches in the Protection Regulation.
