SWM inviteS businesses, policymakers, educators, and innovators from across the Midlands to learn how to prepare for a greener future
About the Event
Sustainability West Midlands (SWM) recognises that the Low Carbon Environmental Goods & Services (LCEGS) sector in the Midlands is thriving, with some sub-sectors growing up to three times faster than the UK average over the past two years. This growth is highlighted in the recent LCEGS study commissioned by the Midlands Net Zero Hub and published earlier this year. The study was delivered by Dr Beck Collins, Senior Sustainability Consultant at SWM, in collaboration with kMatrix Data Services.
The low carbon sector is growing – but is the workforce ready?
From solar startups on the rise to construction firms retrofitting buildings for Net Zero, the region’s low carbon economy is expanding faster than ever before. Jobs are being created, innovations are accelerating, and the demand for green products and services is climbing.
Join this free Sustainability West Midlands event, which will bring together business leaders, policymakers, educators, and innovators to explore how we can equip the Midlands’ workforce for a greener future.
Based on the latest findings from the 2024 LCEGS report, this event will unpack the skills challenges facing the region’s rapidly expanding low carbon sector – from shortages in technical and digital expertise to gaps in green leadership and vocational training.
At the event, you will gain exclusive access to:
- Key insights from the LCEGS report: sector trends, growth forecasts, and workforce needs
- Case studies from local employers already taking action to address the skills gap
- Opportunities for collaboration with training providers, local authorities, and industry bodies
- Actionable strategies to futureproof your business and unlock low carbon growth
Whether you’re in construction, energy, manufacturing, professional services, or digital innovation, the green transition is your business. This event aims to ensure you have the skills to meet the demand.
What is the LCEGS sector?
The LCEGS sector encompasses the industries and businesses that contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and supporting environmental sustainability. It includes a wide range of activities such as renewable energy (like solar and wind), low carbon transport, building technologies (such as insulation and retrofitting), waste management and recycling, energy efficiency services, carbon finance, environmental consultancy, as well as any business that is aiming to become greener.

- Organisations that are looking to upskill their staff in the low carbon sector.
- Local authorities/business support organisations wanting to understand the state of the sector and how best to support it.
- East Midlands organisations wanting to connect with colleagues in the West Midlands.
